$treet $marts: Being Married to An Entrepreneur
Studies show that divorce among entrepreneurs ranges between 43 and 48 percent
I am blessed to have an incredible wife who has always been by my side. Our marriage hasn't always been easy, but after almost throwing in the towel in our first year, we are now celebrating 15 years together. Marriage requires sacrifice and effort, just like our work. Today, I want to share ten things that have helped us grow in our marriage in hopes that they help you.
Building an incredible business is fantastic, but not if it means losing the person you love.
As an entrepreneur, How would you change your approach as a husband to your wife?
I enjoy marriage because I can keep falling in love with my spouse every year. We all change as people, including our partners. The person you marry is not the same person you stay married to. It's important to continue dating your spouse forever.
1. Prioritize Communication:
In Business: Clear, honest, and frequent communication with your team and stakeholders is crucial for success. This keeps everyone aligned and fosters a culture of trust.
In Marriage: Similarly, open and sincere communication with your spouse is vital. Share your thoughts, listen actively, and understand each other's needs and aspirations.
2. Time Management:
In Business: Efficient time management allows you to maximize productivity. Delegate tasks when necessary, and don't micromanage.
In Marriage: Allocate quality time for your spouse. This doesn't always mean grand gestures; even small, consistent acts of love and attention matter.
3. Setting Boundaries:
In Business: Establish clear boundaries to avoid burnout. This includes setting work hours and respecting personal time.
In Marriage: Ensure that your work doesn't consistently encroach on family time. Be present during family activities and respect the sacredness of this time together.
4. Mutual Support and Understanding:
In Business: Encourage a supportive environment where team members feel valued and understood.
In Marriage: Support your spouse's goals and passions. Understand the pressures and demands of each other's roles.
In Business: Having shared goals with your team aligns efforts and drives progress.
In Marriage: Align your life goals with your spouse. This creates a sense of teamwork and shared purpose.
The divorce rate is higher for business owners than in the general population. In fact, studies show that divorce among entrepreneurs ranges between 43 and 48 percent. It's even higher among dual-entrepreneurial marriages, as both are intensely focused on managing their respective businesses.
6. Self-Care and Health:
In Business: Taking care of your physical and mental health improves decision-making and endurance.
In Marriage: A healthy individual contributes positively to the relationship. Regular exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management are key.
7. Continuous Learning and Adaptation:
In Business: Continuously learning and adapting to market changes is essential for growth.
In Marriage: Be open to learning and growing with your spouse. Relationships evolve, and adapting to these changes is crucial.
8. Gratitude and Recognition:
In Business: Recognize and appreciate the efforts of your team.
In Marriage: Regularly express gratitude and appreciation for your spouse. Acknowledge their contributions to the relationship and family life.
9. Balancing Sacrifice and Compromise:
In Both: Understand that both entrepreneurship and marriage involve sacrifice and compromise. Strive to find a balance where neither aspect consistently overshadows the other.
10. Seeking Help When Needed:
In Business: Don't hesitate to seek mentorship or professional advice when faced with challenges.
In Marriage: If you encounter relationship difficulties, consider counseling or therapy as a means to strengthen your bond.
