Xcelerated Performance: You Fall to Your Lowest Level Of Training
It’s only stressful when you are caught in the fog of war
You Don't Rise to The Occasion; You Fall to Your Lowest Level Of Training
This week, I wanted to share some insights on the importance of training and preparation, especially when facing high-pressure situations.
You might wonder why rigorous training is so crucial. Well, think of it like this: In critical moments, we don't magically rise to the occasion; instead, we default to our most ingrained training level. This concept is similar to why the military conducts live fire exercises – it's not to intimidate but to engrain survival instincts and responses in the most stressful conditions.
The hard truth about business is every day is LIVE fire training. Unfortunately, you have to take some bullets. If you want to be an entrepreneur, you can’t run from it - but you can reframe it.
It’s only stressful when you are caught in the fog of war and you have never been there before
Here are 7 Ways to Reframe Stress:
Understand the Importance of Rigorous Training: Recognize that in critical situations, you'll rely on your most ingrained training. Just as military exercises use real scenarios to instill survival instincts, your training should prepare you for the worst-case scenarios, ensuring you react effectively under stress.
Embrace Risk and Uncertainty: High-performance roles often involve risk and uncertainty. Accepting this reality and learning to navigate it is crucial. Understand that facing challenges is integral to growth and develop strategies to manage the associated tension and anxiety.
Engage in Relentless Preparation: Continuous preparation is key. Focus on areas within your control and keep learning to enhance your decision-making skills. This constant state of readiness ensures you have the knowledge and skills needed for unexpected situations.
Train for Extreme Conditions: Aim to perform under extreme pressure. Use training environments that simulate high-stress situations, much like pilots training for emergencies. This prepares your brain to process information efficiently and respond effectively during actual crises.
Make Training a Second Nature: Ensure that your training becomes instinctual. In moments of crisis, deeply ingrained habits and processes are more reliable than newly learned information. Train until your responses become automatic.
Develop Coping Mechanisms for Stress: Under extreme stress, cognitive functions can be impaired. Develop and practice behaviors and thought processes that can be relied upon when you're overwhelmed. This could include stress management techniques or fallback strategies ingrained through training.
Focus on Practice and Span of Control: Regular and focused practice is essential. Concentrate on skills that are crucial in high-stress situations. Use the Span of Control concept to focus on immediate priorities and eliminate distractions. Knowing what to prioritize and what to set aside during a crisis will significantly enhance your performance.
Closing Thoughts
Whether you aspire to be a better speaker, entrepreneur, athlete, or excel in any high-pressure role, there's a fundamental truth we must not forget: You can't escape the work. The journey to excellence is paved with persistent effort and unwavering dedication. It's the relentless pursuit of improvement, the constant honing of skills, and the unwavering commitment to preparation that sets the extraordinary apart. Remember, in the arena of high performance, there are no shortcuts. Embrace the work, and the results will follow.
Best,
Samson
